Nicholas Nourot

Nourot Art Glass

Born into the glass studio,
Nicholas Cash Nourot's early
years were full of hours of
playing in the shop and
watching his parents create
their art glass. One of the
highlights of his early days in
the Nourot studio was the
honor of having a private
lesson with master glass-
blower Lino Tagliapietra.
In 2002 Nicholas moved to
Eugene Oregon to study and
teach at the Eugene Glass
School. Working closely with
Charles Lowery he was inspired by new sculpting techniques he hadn't seen in
the family studio. A class at the Eugene school introduced Nicholas to the Italian
style of goblet making.
Nicholas taught at San Jose State University under professor Mary White. There
he was fortunate enough to be there for the 40th anniversary of the SJSU glass
program, at which he was able to meet and assist Fritz Drisbach.
In the summer of 2005 Nicholas was accepted into a James Mongrain Venetian
goblet making course at the famed Pilchuck Glass School. This course exposed
him to a level of technical ability with glass he had yet to see. The following
summer Nicholas was accepted into Dante Marioni’s class in Scotland. Also
during this exploratory time Nicholas made several trips to study on the island of
Murano, taking a course at the Vetro School, and observing such masters as
Pino Signoretto.
Interest in how the red glass formulas were made led Nicholas to working as the
batch master as well. Micheal and Nicholas worked together to create some of
the largest and most technical pieces ever created in the Nourot Studio. The next
few years saw Nicholas introduce new patterns and shapes to the Nourot line. In
2012 Nicholas became the soul creator of all of Nourot Art Glass. Constantly
innovating and expanding Nicholas prefers a playful approach in the studio, using
experimentation to bring uniqueness to his work.

Rachel Bautin

Rachel Bautin is a glass artist based in the San Francisco Bay
Area and Maui, whose work is inspired by the beauty and
complexity of the natural world. Surrounded by Northern
California’s diverse landscapes and the vibrant, tropical
surroundings of Maui, Rachel’s deep connection to nature
developed at an early age and continues to influence her art
today. Her glass vessels and sculptures explore themes of
transformation, resilience, whimsy, and the delicate
interplay of light and color.
Rachel began her career in 1997 at Nourot Glass Studio in
Benicia, CA, where she apprenticed under Ann Corcoran, the
wife of renowned glass artist Michael Nourot. Under Ann's
mentorship, Rachel honed her skills in glassblowing,
learning both traditional techniques and innovative approaches that shaped her artistic
style.
Her work, characterized by organic forms and a deep appreciation for nature, evokes the
fluidity of water, the intricate structures of plants, and abstract representations of natural
phenomena. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary experimentation,
Rachel continues to expand the boundaries of the medium. Through her glass art, Rachel
captures both the fragility and strength of the natural world, creating pieces that engage
with light, texture, and form in dynamic ways.
In addition to her gallery exhibitions, Rachel has worked on custom projects for high-profile
clients. While at the Nourot Studio, Rachel was involved in creating custom lighting for
locations at Lucas Ranch, the Rotunda Building in Oakland, CA, and the Peppermill Casino
in Reno, NV among others. Rachel also developed custom glass awards for organizations
like Sutter Health, Bio-Rad Laboratories, the City of Piedmont, and Americans for the Arts.
Rachel’s work can be found in select galleries including locations in Benicia, CA,
Calistoga, CA, Maui, HI, and Sedona, AZ. Her art has been recognized for its innovative
approach and emotional depth, earning her a dedicated following and recognition in the
glass art community.
Outside of her work, Rachel enjoys scuba diving, hiking, gardening, and spending time with
her animals. She is an avid traveler, always eager to explore new places and draw
inspiration from the world around her, splitting her time between the Bay Area and Maui to
fully embrace the diverse beauty each location offers.
